What can be said about a book that's already a classic? Well, there are some good, swift kicks in the rear, for one thing. Writing is serious business, and Pressfield brings that home in a way you won't forget. If you're tired of messing around with unfocused writing and a career that's in puzzle pieces, this book helps you get where you keep saying you want to go.

Stephen Pressfield returns to the theme he developed in the classic “The War of Art” of professionalism versus amateurism. At the most basic level, he wants to encourage aspiring artists to give up the life of the dilettante who dabbles in multiple artistic projects but always succumbs to “Resistance”, and to embrace the life of daily combat against all of the forces of resistance. The book largely consists of Pressfield’s contrast of these two themes. His vision of amateurism is better defined. The amateur is the one who always succumbs to Resistance, even builds a life and career around Resistance. One common manifestation of this is the self-sabotage of addiction or compulsion; another is the building of a “shadow career” in which the trappings of success hide the secret truth - known only to the would-be artist - that the artistic impulse has been denied or betrayed.Pressfield says surprisingly little about professionalism. There is almost nothing about the habits of successful writers and artists, except that one must show up every day and fight the forces of Resistance with the courage of a warrior. Perhaps this is enough, or perhaps this is all that can be communicated.Either way, the larger point is that Pressfield is advocating a kind of Gnostic conversion. He references Gnosticism and the mystical ways of thinking in neo-Platonism, Kabbalah, and Eastern religion throughout. We live in the corrupt material sphere, and Resistance is the malign force that keeps us from ascending into a higher plane of existence where creation can occur. Resistance pressures us to conform ourselves to the material world, and to deny our own authenticity. Only the daily struggle against Resistance, carried out through courageous and habitual confrontations, can secure us our authenticity. The Gnostic turn is strange, but central. He starts from the theme that we are all exiles. Traditional religious faiths teach that we are alienated from God; modern psychology uses the model of disease and therapy. Pressfield offers a third way of approaching this fundamental human experience of homelessness, and seems to encourage the creation of a community of self-aware artists.

This is an interesting read. First of all, it's short. Some of the "chapters" are one page or less. It has a new-agey feel that's not uncommon in the self-help genre, but at the same time, you get the feeling that Pressfield is sincere about the message--even when the message is somewhat unclear. It feels like he's so sincere, in fact, that he's trying to think of every possible way to communicate the theme of the book, in case you missed the message the first ten times. There were pages/chapters in this book that I really connected with, and there were pages/chapters that I re-read several times and still had no idea what I was supposed to glean from them. In those cases I gave up and moved on, and I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything. So why am I giving this 4 stars?I'm a programmer by trade, but what gives my life meaning is music. In particular, writing songs is something I've aspired to do well, with sporadic success, for most of my adult life. I'm also in my mid 40s, and I'm a husband and a father. I had all but capitulated to what Pressfield calls the "resistance" -- the force that pulls you away from your art, and lulls you into apathy. In short, I wasn't writing, and hadn't been for many years. I read this book a week ago, and immediately carved out an hour a day during my hectic weekly schedule to start paying my dues to the muse. Wrote two songs. Neither one is great, but I wrote them, and I plan to keep on writing, and improving my craft, because this is _really important to me_.Thank you, Steven Pressfield.(Also, his novel Gates of Fire is amazing.)

I heard about this book from listening to a podcast by Master Coach Brooke Castillo. She carried on about the author, his books and his influence on her.I was listening to this before take off on a flight from San Diego to San Francisco for work. I down loaded the book quickly before take off. It's short, in your face and to the point. I loved it and will read it again. It's about taking stock and reflecting on your own story. I nearly finished it before landing.Hey reference Ryan Holiday and his books. Ego is the Enemy and the Obstacle is the way. I blasted though both of those books too!I'd read it again!

If I hadn't read previous books by the same author I may have given it a four star rating. But, despite being enthusiastic and inspiring in typical Pressfield manner, I believe that this book is simply another take on the same material contained in previous, more substantial books by Mr. Pressfield. If we were friends, I would kindly suggest he may have exhausted this theme. If it is your first book by the time his author, it is probably worth it. Personally, I found myself skimming it for new information. The authority, energy and inspiration are there, but I found myself wanting for that little bit of something new.

What is the role of the neighbourhood in our understanding of community and how has this role changed over the last century? Talja Blokland seeks to answer this question in this careful ethnographic study of the changing nature of social relationships and urban communities. This outstanding and thoughtful book interweaves two rather different but parallel lines of inquiry: a detailed study of the history and current social life of an inner city neighbourhood in Rotterdam, and a general reflection on the changing character of social ties in urban areas.

The book is organized around broad conceptual issues in a way that presents the empirical material within a framework that is relevant for teaching purposes. Blokland addresses key issues of community and identity and draws on a wide range of literature in urban sociology. Urban Bonds is set to become a classic in its field and will be widely used in courses on urban sociology, human geography, and ethnicity.

Ultimate truth. The destiny of souls. The individual heart. Can Krishna and Jesus agree on anything?

This is what Subramaniam, a real-life Hindu of the twentieth century, wonders as he enters a fictitious conversation between two religious figures who have changed the lives of millions. As Jesus and Krishna respond to each other’s view of life and the afterlife, they speak words straight from the texts of Christianity and Hinduism and straight into the soul.

Subramaniam asks Jesus and Krishna hard questions about faith. Meanwhile, a fictional character, Richard, eavesdrops, asking himself the most important question of all:

Does it really matter what I believe?

Krishna is revered by millions of people worldwide, and writing on any figure honored that greatly is difficult.

But I am doing so because the one notion that all religions subscribe to (either explicitly or implicitly) is the notion of exclusive truth. Populists like to deny that premise, but all religions either make this claim or try to covertly smuggle it in.

The question, therefore, is not whether one enjoys a discussion like the one that follows in this book but whether the arguments are fairly presented. That is much harder to do, especially where length is limited. I have, therefore, selected to write about what I consider to be the greatest differences between Jesus and Krishna.

As always, putting words into the mouths of historic figures is a challenge. I have done my best to take ideas straight from what has already been quoted in each faith’s sacred texts and put them into context here.

Hinduism is a complex belief system. At times the following conversation will become quite philosophical and intricate. Please be patient as we work through these areas of belief so that the truth and beauty of Christ’s gospel is fairly presented against the backdrop of Hinduism’s complexity. To present either of these beliefs as simple is to not understand them fully.

As with the other books in this series, I have introduced a third personality who can raise questions legitimately, since any known conversations between Jesus and Krishna do not exist. Subramaniam was a real person. Born a Hindu in the early part of the twentieth century, his is one of the most remarkable stories I have ever read. He challenged the religion of his birth and faced immense persecution for his actions, being ostracized and finally fleeing from his hometown to avoid death.

Incidentally, I have always marveled that so many religions exact this kind of revenge against dissenters. It only weakens the appeal of their own faith and contradicts any claims they might have made that “all religions are basically the same.” If all religions are indeed the same, why not let someone be "converted” to another religion?

I also marvel at the fury sometimes evident in those who attack others for examining and questioning their own worldview. If the repercussions of converting weren’t so serious, it would almost be comical to see the animosity of the responses. But what this revenge demonstrates so strongly is an inbuilt belief that conversion is wrong. And why is conversion so forbidden?

It circles back again to the one notion that all religions subscribe to—the notion of exclusive truth. I have also introduced a fourth character, Richard, a fictional traveler to India who converses with Subramaniam on the road to Mathura and later eavesdrops on the conversation between Jesus, Krishna, and Subramaniam.

Richard does not lean heavily behind the curtain, as Subramaniam does, but it is my hope that he will someday—as it is my hope that all people who seek spiritual truth will. Another factor is at stake in the following discussion: it is easy to take the weakest aspect of a worldview and exploit it. But that is not what I wish to do. When one encounters expressions of belief that are openly affirmed and followed, even when they seem bizarre, one must ask the hardest questions. One must examine the stronger
aspects of any worldview as well.

At base, one of my consistent premises throughout this series is that the popular aphorism “All religions are fundamentally the same and only superficially different” simply is not true. It is more correct to say that all religions are, at best, superficially similar but fundamentally different.

In the pages to come, I hope that the vast differences between Christianity and Hinduism will become very evident in this imaginary dialogue. Yet it is important to remember that, as different as these faiths are, we must learn to accept those differences peaceably. Still, let us not be so mindless as to think that Christianity and Hinduism are saying the same thing and that, in the end, the differences do not really matter. Both claim to be true and legitimate. This rationally implies, then, that it does matter what you believe. That is what this imaginary dialogue is about.

From AudioFile
Simon Vance's effortless-sounding narration of a fictional chat between Jesus and Krishna is helped along by a real-life Hindu of the twentieth century, Subramaniam, who asks hard questions about Hinduism and Christianity. The author's premise is that both religions contain exclusive claims to truth. Vance interprets the author's work with delicate authenticity and reveals a basic difference between the two faiths: Hindus believe in reincarnation while Christians believe in the resurrection. Vance's crisp, clear presentation provides three benefits for listeners: an appreciation of the distinctive aspects of Christianity and Hinduism, excellent examples of how to dialogue on sensitive issues, and help for seekers on "finding one's way." This well-done teaching audio is a creative way for Christians to learn about Hinduism. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

I've read all of the books by Kiyosaki. This is the best for content as it reviews all of his other books information. Just buy this book and pass on ALL his other ones, it'll save you some money. I read one of the other reviews and it mentioned he needed to get a better proof reader. I thought maybe the reviewer was just picky, but after reading this book I know what they mean. Misspelled words, missing words, etc. Lost count after 10 mistakes. Worst book for mistakes I've ever read. The content is good, so I'd recommend it. I hope Robert Kiyosaki reads this review and corrects the errors. Nothing worse than reading a good book with lots of errors.

Gave it to my dad before telling him my grades after a particularly lethargic semester of college. I would definitely recommend this to any student who is worried about not getting the best grades. Always good to remind parents that grades are not the most important thing.

Gives guides how to deal with your credit card debt. Good strategies there. Pay minimum on all cards, then choose one that you will close and double or triple payment (whatever you can). Then once closed, repeat the process with the next card, while adding the payment from the first (closed card) to boost effect. Repeat until you are credit card debt free.

I have had a total paradigm shift in my thinking after reading this book. Now I am educating myself in how to invest and not just in RRSPIf you want to get out of the rat race and begin a path towards financial freedom then this book will give you fresh insight and new ideas.

Robert Kiyosaki's book is revolutionary. Why “A” students work for “C” students is simply a timeless book with regards to the dollar being off the gold standard. This book is a must-read for every person; it explains thoroughly (400 pages) about how to make money in today's society. Simple financial education that should be taught and valued the same, if not above the calculus and biochemistry that schools so highly regard as pertinent to our lives.

Love Roberts books and how he relates them to easy understandable language. With having the 1st of 4 kids heading to college I have been immersing myself into the knowledge I need as a parent to help guide them to be successful in whatever that might be. As a parent it is EXTREMLY hard to get your child to think differently about not being an employee. The whole school system is working hard to make sure that they do become employees. My son wants to become a history teacher, and with the current situation and uncertainty about teachers, it really worries me. I then remember in Roberts teachings that your job is your income and investing is your wealth. I have had great success in sharing that thought process with my son. He likes nice things and has a great work ethic so thanks to ALL of Roberts great teachings I see a great future for him.I am so glad that you wrote this book so my wife can be on board with me as shes reading this now. My wife feels there's security in a job. Shes always been an employee, and thinks thats the right thing to do. It's taken alot of time and effort even through our many successes of owning businesses and rental real estate. She does finally see the rewards from the effort. Also she has had alot of friends whom can't find work even after getting college degrees. Alot of her co-workers have $10's of thousands of college debt making only $12-14 an hour, because thats all they can get. I am so glad that you help guide and educate us that there is another way. Financial education is so important for the world right now with everything thats going on. Please keep the books coming as I am one of your biggest fans...

My wife and I were at a crossroads, focus on eliminating credit card debt or use savings to invest. We want to grow and have a better future. This book helped us make our decision by giving us basic debt education.

I loved this book for its encouragement and emphasis that the roads may be tough but I will surely succeed in being where I want to be financially and this has nothing to do with my aptitude in abstract matter but the intelligence I constantly grow through improvements in the level of my financial literacy.I recommend this book to every entrepreneur and those who have dreams of becoming financially secure.
