About the Author
Dr. Prabir Basu, founding President of Greenfield Research Incorporated, a private research and development company in Canada that specializes in gasification and torrefaction, is an active researcher and designer of biomass energy conversion systems. Dr. Basu holds a position of Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department and is Head of Circulating Fluidized Bed Laboratory at Dalhousie University, Halifax His current research interests include frontier areas, chemical looping gasification, torrefaction, biomass cofiring amongst others.

Professor Basu also founded of the prestigious triennial International Conference series on Circulating Fluidized Beds, and a private R&D company, Fluidized Bed Systems Limited that specializes on design, training and investigative services on fluidized bed boilers.

Professor Basu has been working in the field of energy conversion and the environment for more than 30 years. Prior to joining the engineering faculty at Dalhousie University (formerly known as the Technical University of Nova Scotia), he worked with both a government research laboratory and a boiler manufacturing company.

Dr. Basu’s passion for the transformation of research results into industrial practice is well known, as is his ongoing commitment to spreading advanced knowledge around the world. He has authored more than 200 research papers and seven monographs in emerging areas of energy and environment, some of which have been translated into Chinese and Korean. He is well known internationally for providing expert advices on circulating fluidized bed boilers and conducting training courses to industries and universities across the globe.

This makes a beautiful coffee table book. I was impressed by how thoroughly it covers the history of photography- all the way up to the present. It made a wonderful gift.

Let me confess. . . . I am not a photographer. I will occasionally use someone else's camera to take a picture on their behalf. But I don't do many shots on my own for myself. I actually bought this book for someone else in the family, but could not resist picking it up and taking a look, since I do enjoy this series (Eyewitness Companions). And, boy, did I enjoy taking a peek inside this volume.The book begins by noting that, literally, photography means "writing with light," a rather apropos term, given what a picture can say. Tom Ang's introduction goes on to note that (Page 12): To contemplate the true extent of [photography's] social reach and cultural impact is awe-inspiring."The first substantive part of the book is probably my favorite--mainly because it focuses on great photographers rather than more "technical" issues. Here, we are introduced to Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus (The picture is not included here, but take a look in one of her collections with that famous picture of Ozzie and Harriet! It's unbelievable), Andre Kertesz, Annie Leibovitz (all those photos of hers focusing on rock and roll!), Alfred Stieglitz, and so on. And Margaret Bourke-White sitting on the Chrysler Building taking a photo still takes my breath away! Very brief consideration of each, but for a nonexpert, it's enjoyable to get a sense of the person and an example or two of their art. There follows a history of photography, from camera obscura to digital technology, which I also find fascinating.Then, on to more technical issues. Real pros will not find this terribly useful, but for amateurs and "wanna-bes," this would probably prove helpful. Among issues discussed: tools of photography, working with digital images, the elements of photography, taking successful photos, and so on.Again, for the person who wants a general introduction to photography, to place photography in context, this is a good start.

This is a great coffee table book, we display it in our home as a table peace, but we also love to look through it as we are photographers ourselves. This is a great conversation starter but also simply something nice to have in our home as decor.

This is probably the most useful book about UI design for speech applications I've seen, very sensible and straight forward, with the right amount of attention given to a good range of topics.I hate the term 'VUI' because it sounds silly when you say it. Apart from that, this book's a great source for UI workers.

Helped me with my job, and the clear, lightly-humorous writing style also made it non-painful to get through. Bonus! The information was organized very well, too.

About the Author
James E. House is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at Illinois State University, where he taught for 32 years. His teaching included a wide range of courses in general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, chemical kinetics, and special topics courses in solid state, nuclear, and descriptive chemistry. He also served as Visiting Professor of Chemistry and Advanced Studies at the University of Illinois in 1991 and Visiting Professor at Illinois Wesleyan University in 1997 and 2002. His research led to 135 publications in professional journals, many of them dealing with kinetics of reactions in solids. House was also active in the Illinois Academy of Sciences. He served as its President in 1976 and as Editor of the Transactions of the Illinois State Academy of Sciences for five years and is an elected Fellow of the Academy. He is included in American Men and Women of Science, Who's Who in Technology, and Outstanding Educators of America (1972). In recent years, House has become interested in airguns, which led to his book American Air Rifles (Krause, 2001). He is on the editorial boards of two magazines in that field and writes for several others.
